Casper, Humidity Fighting Duvet

User Research, Data Analysis, Design, & Development

It’s not easy to make a white rectangle interesting, but I think I did. Working with lots of data and some wonderful raw materials, I designed and developed a merino wool + white down duvet that keeps you warm and dry year round.

The Microclimate

Our bodies have a biological thermostat (aka thermoregulation), a wonderful set of automatic processes that maintain internal core temperature when the microclimate changes, not so wonderful in that they can disrupt sleep.

Too Hot

When your core temperate rises (aka you get hot), you sweat (typically above 98.6˚), you toss/turn and kick the covers. Nobody likes to wake up sweaty in the middle of the night..

Too Cold

When your core temperate drops (aka you get cold), blood vessels contract, extremities get cold, you shiver, and your heart rate increases. These natural reactions disturb sleep and break critical sleep cycles.

Just Right

Maintaining proper core temperature is key to good sleep. To get it right, it is somewhat of a balancing act between body temperature, ambient temperature, insulation, and material permeability.

Data Analysis

Using some customized temperature and humidity sensors, I logged hundreds of hours of data across various sleep user profiles. The analysis returned compelling insights that directly drove new product designs and development.

Materials

Mother Nature nailed it.

100% Cotton

Lightweight, breathable, and durable, cotton is the ultimate choice for sheeting fabric. It stays cool throughout the night and gets softer with every wash.

Duck Down

An inner coat unique to waterfowl birds, the down cluster keeps birds warm, buoyant, and keeps eggs warm during nesting. Down is the best insulator per weight in the world.

Merino Wool

Natural, sustainable, odor fighting, and with an unbelievable ability to absorb moisture vapor, wool both insulates and manages humidity.
